Contrarily to Europe, where the question has been present since the 1960s, In Turkey the debate around public space emerged only in 1990, but more from a political standpoint; indeed, “public space” in Turkish is said kamusal alan, kamu generally indicating a direct link with the State. Today, problems remain in the definition of the concept of a “public space”, not due to a translation issue but rather to the cultural and mental specificities to that region of the world. Under the Ottoman Empire, streets and mosque courtyards were the only assembly and meeting places for citizens; there were the meydans (public squares) under the Republic, but these were essentially used for political manifestations. As such, the public space has never been conceived of as a space for leisure, meetings and debate.
